Until 1925 it was located in the house of Leontovich on Admiralskaya Street (at the site of the current Regional Executive Committee), and has been expanded since 1925, it is located in a new location - near the central bus station at the site of the Old City cemetery. It currently occupies an area of 18.48 hectares.
In 1993, the first among the zoos of Ukraine was admitted to the European Union of Zoos and Aquariums (EAZA). Participates in 18 rare animal breeding programs in Europe (EERs) and is a member of the Eurasian Regional Association of Zoos and Aquariums (EARAZ), the International Animal Accounting System (ISIS). In May 2003, Mykolaiv Zoo was the first zoo in Ukraine to be admitted to the World Association of Animals and Aquariums (WAZA).
