One of the gardens of South Tyneside
The history of the garden is closely related to the industrial heritage of the region - quarries and ownership of the glass plant and lime kilns. The land was owned by a local coal merchant, James Kirkley, an agent for the Harton Coal Company, who commissioned the current garden design, including Dell and other elements of the official park design.
