Hough End Fields occupies the site of the Alexandra Park Aerodrome opened in 1918 for the test flying and delivery of locally built aircraft for the RAF. The first UK domestic air service in 1919 was from Alexandra Park Aerodrome to Southport and Blackpool. By 1922 regular services flew to London, Berlin and Moscow. The aerodrome's existence is commemorated on a plaque in the sports pavilion.
