At the gates of Moorish Granada, outside the Puerta de Elvira, there was a graveyard until the city was handed over to the Catholic Monarchs; in the course of the expansion of the city nearby churches, various splendid buildings and a bullring arose; the open space in front of the old city gate was long used for folk festivals. After the conquest of the city by Napoleon's troops, executions were carried out in this area; even after the end of the occupation, this benefit was maintained.
