The nature reserve Listhof extends in the immediate vicinity of the environmental education center. Until 1992, the site was used by the French military as a training ground. The military use created a diverse mosaic of different stages of change, so-called "successions". Since these areas were largely spared intensive use, a large number of rare animal and plant species were able to settle. Thus, the former military training area is characterized by its diverse species occurrence of birds, wild bees, dragonflies, butterflies and grasshoppers. As some species are of supraregional importance, the area was declared a nature reserve in September 2000.
