The lake was built as a quarry pool to extract sand and gravel as building materials. After the completion of the excavation, the ditch hole was designed with its banks and environment in the seventies near nature and converted into a general green area.
Jröne Meerke is part of a green corridor across Neuss, and runs along the northern canal of Rheinpark in the rose garden, the city park, the city's forest and other private green areas to the north of Neuss. In Karst, the green strip continues on Lake Kirst and stretches over the Forster forest and the Beverdsbrueck nature reserve to the east of Nersau.
Alongside the surrounding natural areas, Jröne Meerke is the important Neuss recreation area. The resort is popular among jogging, walking, as a place to rest and other leisure activities. There is a small beach on the lake, garden, playground, barbecue area and other facilities.
The lake is known for its large numbers of geese, which have evolved into a plague since 2012. The number of geese resident more than doubled between 2009 and 2012, initially from about 80. The lake has snow, gray, and canary canaries as well as other goose species. In addition, there are pelicans, water birds and other folding. In addition, more than 200 wild geese rest on the Merk River during migration.
Because of the huge feces of birds, health problems arise. Stools can cause excessive water softening and thus plague algae. Germs, such as salmonella and coliform bacteria, can be transmitted to garden visitors. Children's playground was closed because of the risk of infection. During 2015, water quality improvement and reduction of the number of geese were planned through a range of measures.
