The botanical garden includes:
a mountain or rock garden (Alpinum)
a tree garden (arboretum) with dawn redwoods and a total of 2900 woody species
a healing and spice plant department
a Japanese garden with a low-German thatched cottage and extensive rhododendron collection
a morphological department
a department for evergreen plants
a systematic department.
A dammed watercourse, the Kayenmühlengraben, flows through the botanical garden and serves as a demonstration of pond biotopes. Guided tours and events, including the Plattdeutsche Buchertag, take place regularly in the Botanical Garden. In the winter months of December to February, the garden is restricted.
