A popular destination
The city park is one of the most popular destinations in Magdeburg. Rafting on the Adolf-Mittag-See by boat, sitting on the lakeside terraces in the beer garden or exercising on the garden or hiking trails is a particularly welcome activity on summer weekends.
Historical Background
Already in the early 19th century, the eastern side of the island was used after the construction of Cracauer Quay in 1819 as a beach. In 1871, the city council decided the gardener's design of the previously undeveloped southern region of the island.
Garden Design
The park's director, Paul Nemeyer, then led a plan designed for a 25-acre city park. However, areas that are often vulnerable to flooding at the southern end, which also include Fortifications of Fort XII, were not included in the banks of the Elbe River in the eastern part. This was only after 1898, when the park was greatly enlarged. At this time also appeared Lake Adolf Metage and the temple on Marieninsel.
Architectural Engineering
One of the most striking architectural features of the large garden is the Bauhaus-style Stadthalle. The building was completed on the occasion of the exciting German International Theater Fair in 1927 in only four and a half months. The building was completed at the 60-meter-high Albinmüller Tower and the Horse Gate.
