The core area of the nature reserve is the nearly 4 km long, southeasternmost section of the northwest to 119 m above sea level. NHN high Altenberger back, which is separated less by geological or orographic characteristics than by the city boundary. This section is called after the district Nienberge, north of the Altenberger back runs out, also Nienberger heights.
Vorberg hills are the most significant forest area in the north of Münster. Deciduous forest dominates the hills, the crests are covered with forest. Typical are hedges and hedge-like vegetation cultures, which also extend through the hilly landscape. In a few places Vorberg hills are interrupted by fields. The hills are a typical part of the Münsterland park landscape.
