The park was inaugurated on 30 October 1971 by the then mayor of the municipality Oldentrup, Helmut Bökenbrink, and the then acting Lord Mayor of Bielefeld, Herbert Hinnendahl. As an inauguration gift, Lord Mayor Hinnendahl handed over two swans and eight ducks as the first population for the park pond according to the motto "swans instead of barges". At this time, the first planting of the park consisted of 44,000 plants.
The Oldentruper Park is attractive not only as a closed district park but also offers walkers and cyclists the opportunity to directly reach the neighboring districts green (such as Heepen and Stieghorst) easily.
