After the establishment of a small garden plant on the Moerser road in 1949, the park was expanded in 1950 by 32 ha. In the course of this expansion, a surface filled with rubbish was transformed into a hill and planted. In the years between 1955 and 1962, again with the support of the SVR, an area of 4.5 ha could be developed like a park; another (18.6 ha) was reforested in the forest. The old part of the Volkspark, which was affected by the effects of war and subsidence, was simultaneously remodeled.
The complex is equipped with several games and sports facilities, water areas (Flamingo pond, Johanniter pond), a heather garden, a Damtiergehege, a bandstand, a park café, a miniature golf course. Seasonal concerts are performed in the bandstand.
