In the years 1911 to 1913, the park was completed in its basic structure. From 1923 to 1927 followed by some extensions, such as the new building of the heated water lilies basin (1923), the perennial and rose garden for the Stadtgärtnerei (1925), the Stadtgarten-Café (1925) and the expansion to the west by 9 ha with the concert and the sports field. In the aftermath of the city park was subject to constant change, most recently by the construction of the Berlin Bridge (A 59), whereby a part of the eastern section was separated.
The Stadtpark forms an important recreational area for the heavily polluted districts of Untermeyer and Mittelmeiderich. It offers generous lawns on which numerous single trees and groups of trees with different wooded areas are arranged. An extensive network of trails connects the garden-like recreational areas with rose and perennial beds, the 1990 redesigned playground facilities, the sports and the Hundedressurplatz and allotment gardens in the west of the park.
